Questions
When is the next Making Tax Digital quarterly update due?
7 November 2026, for the period 6 April to 5 October 2026 (or 1 April to 30 September 2026 if you use calendar update periods). The next ones are due 7 February and 7 May 2027.
Is there a penalty for a late quarterly update in 2026 to 2027?
No penalty points for late quarterly updates in the 2026 to 2027 tax year, GOV.UK says. You still have to send every update before you can submit your tax return in software, and late tax returns still get points.
What does a quarterly update contain?
Totals for each income and expense category, for the tax year so far, worked out by your software from your digital records. HMRC does not receive individual receipts or invoices.
Do I have to send an update if nothing happened?
Yes. If you had no income and no expenses in the period, you still send the quarterly update to tell HMRC.
My bank only gives me PDF statements. What now?
Turn the PDF into a CSV or Excel file, check it, and import it into your Making Tax Digital software or bridging spreadsheet. GOV.UK lists CSV importing as one way to link records digitally. Keep the original statements too: HMRC still expects them as supporting records.
Can DocFig send my quarterly update?
No. DocFig is not Making Tax Digital software and does not connect to HMRC. It turns bank statements into files your software can import.
