Which 1099 expenses are deductible?

The IRS instructions speak of ordinary and necessary expenses of your business. For example, line 17 takes accountants' and attorneys' fees, including business tax preparation; line 18 office supplies and postage; line 25 utilities, but not the base rate of the first phone line into your home; line 9 actual car costs or the standard mileage rate, 70 cents per mile for 2025. For meals, the total shown on line 24b is what you spent: the deductible amount is a percentage, in most cases 50%, and entertainment is not included.

Keywords cannot know your business: a fuel payment may be partly personal, and some costs are depreciated rather than deducted. The tool does not split business and personal use and does not cover business use of your home on line 30. Check every figure with the IRS instructions for Schedule C or a tax preparer. Guidance only, not tax advice. The file is read in your browser and never uploaded. Filing in the UK? Use the self-employed expenses sorter for SA103.

How do I report 1099 expenses?
