E-invoice checker: is this XRechnung or ZUGFeRD invoice usable?

Choose an XRechnung XML or a ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDF and get a plain answer first: does the profile count as an e-invoice in Germany, do the sums add up, are the required EN 16931 fields there, and are the VAT ID, IBAN and Leitweg-ID check digits right. Then read the invoice itself. A quick check before you send or book it, not the official validation. The file never leaves your device.

  2. Required fields and sums from EN 16931, with rule numbers.
  3. Check digits of the German VAT ID, the IBAN and a Leitweg-ID.

Questions

How do I check if an e-invoice is valid?

Choose the XRechnung XML or ZUGFeRD PDF on this page for a quick check of the profile, the sums and the required fields. For a binding answer, run it through the official KoSIT validator with the XRechnung configuration, or the validator your recipient names.

Is this an XRechnung validator?

It is a quick checker, not the official validator: it does not test the XML schema or every Schematron rule, so an invoice can pass here and still be rejected. It catches the common problems: wrong profile, sums that do not add up, missing required fields and wrong check digits.

Which ZUGFeRD profiles count as e-invoices in Germany?

ZUGFeRD from version 2.0.1 counts, except the profiles MINIMUM and BASIC WL, the German Ministry of Finance says in its letter of 15 October 2024. EN 16931 (formerly COMFORT), EXTENDED and XRechnung qualify.

What is a Leitweg-ID and how is it checked?

The routing ID German public bodies ask for in the buyer reference (BT-10). It ends in two check digits; the page checks them the same way as an IBAN (ISO 7064, mod 97). A wrong ID usually means the invoice cannot be delivered to the authority.

Why does the VAT ID check fail?

A German VAT ID (USt-IdNr.) is DE plus 9 digits, and the last digit is a check digit. If it does not match, the number has a typo. The page does not look the number up in the official register.

Does it check credit notes too?

Yes. Credit notes in UBL (CreditNote) and CII are read like invoices and checked with the same rules.

Is my invoice uploaded?

No. The XML is read by your browser, and the XML inside a PDF is taken out by pdf.js on your device. Nothing is sent to DocFig or anyone else.
