What fits in 100 KB
100 KB is a comfortable size for a photo on a form and a workable size for a document. Typical uses are a clearer photograph where the form allows more than 50 KB, a scan of an identity card, a caste, income or domicile certificate page, a mark sheet, or a proof of address photographed with a phone. As always, the limits that count are the ones the form states.
The main difference from smaller targets is that text has to stay readable. A face survives heavy compression; small print does not.
Compress a document photo to 100 KB with readable text
- Crop to the page. A photo of a certificate on a table is often half table. Cropping first gives every byte to the document.
- Pick a sensible width. Around 1,000 to 1,400 pixels wide is enough to read an A4 page on screen. Type a width under Width and height, keep Fit inside, and the page will use a higher quality at that size than it could at full camera resolution.
- Flat and evenly lit. Shadows and creases add detail the compressor has to keep, and they make the text harder to read.
- Zoom the preview. Before downloading, open the after image and check the smallest text you need, such as a registration number.
Photos at 100 KB
For a photograph, 100 KB is enough to keep a few hundred thousand pixels at a high JPG quality, or a full-width phone photo at a low one. If the form gives no pixel size, the page reduces the size only as far as it has to, keeping proportions. A photo smaller than about 1,000 pixels across usually reaches 100 KB by quality alone and keeps its size.
Several images at once
Document uploads often come in sets: both sides of an ID card, or several certificates. Choose them all together. Each is compressed separately to 100 KB with the same settings, listed with its own before and after preview, and can be saved one by one or with Download all.
Other sizes
If 100 KB is still too large for the portal, compress image to 50 KB gives tips for photos at that size; for multi-page or detailed documents with room to spare, compress image to 200 KB keeps more detail. Any other number works on reduce image size in KB. All of them run in your browser, so ID scans and certificates never leave your device.
The image is redrawn with your browser's own canvas, so the result depends on the browser's JPG, PNG and WebP encoders. MDN's image file type guide explains which format suits photos, signatures and scans.
